DOLLARD-DES ORMEAUX | A 13-year-old student from “École des Sources” in Dollard-Des Ormeaux, on the West Island of Montreal, was arrested for uttering threats against the school on social media.

Students went to meet with members of management early Wednesday afternoon to inform them that “one or more students were making direct threats to the school” via the popular Instagram social network.

“The management contacted the Police Department of the City of Montreal and an investigation was immediately opened,” said police officer Benoit Boisselle, spokesperson for the Montreal police.

As a precautionary measure, school leaders decided to cancel all classes on Thursday.

On its website, “École secondaire des Sources” stated that the establishment would be closed because of “exceptional circumstances”.

The police investigation quickly found the alleged perpetrator. The 13-year-old was arrested Wednesday late in the day and released on a promise to appear at a later date. The young man faces charges of threats and his file was turned over to the Youth Chamber.

The apprehended teenager is a student from “École secondaire des Sources”, which has a little over 1,500 students.

The police conducted a search of the suspect’s residence. According to the authorities, no weapons and no explosive material were found.

The investigation is still ongoing in this case and the police do not rule out the possibility of further arrests.
