Mexico has extradited Damaso Lopez, one of Mexico’s leading drug lords El Chapo, who is due to be tried in New York City, in the United States, the prosecutor said on Friday.
“This morning, in Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua (north), was handed over for extradition Damascus” Lopez, told the media Alberto Elias, Deputy Attorney General.
Lopez, who is “potentially a key witness” against Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, will be brought to trial in the state of Virginia, in the eastern United States, for alleged “criminal conspiracy”, the magistrate.
Damaso Lopez was arrested on May 2, 2017 by Mexican authorities in a residential area of Mexico City.
El Chapo, whose trial is scheduled to begin in September in the United States, is accused of leading the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most powerful on the continent, for more than 20 years. According to the prosecution, he has, in this context, ordered multiple murders and kidnappings, even going so far as to torture his victims himself.
In July 2015, the drug lord escaped from a high-security prison near Mexico City by a tunnel equipped with rails. He was captured in January 2016, after six months on the run, inflicting a serious snub in the government and extradited to the United States.
