Bid amounts explode for Laval’s future aquatic complex

Estimated initially at $ 61M, the project costs of the future aquatic complex in Laval could explode, while the amounts of bids in the call for tenders vary between $ 82 and $ 85M.

Already, more than $ 8.3M has been disbursed for the realization of plans and specifications and the preparation of the foundations of the building. The total costs associated with the construction of the aquatic complex, which should include three pools, could therefore be at least $ 90 million.

In the annual budget of the Ville de Laval in 2017, the project was projected at just over $ 60M.

“Bad planning,” says the opposition

In a statement sent Wednesday, the opposition leader in Laval denounced “the poor planning of this project.”

“Laval taxpayers have never been consulted prior to the planning of this aquatic complex and they may have to pay 50% more than the initial forecasts. We will oppose the award of any contract that exceeds the planned budget and adopted by the city council, “said Michel Trottier.

With the completion of work scheduled for 2020, the City of Laval hoped that swimming events could take place there while hosting the Quebec Games.

At the time of writing, it has been impossible to obtain a justification from Laval Mayor Marc Demers for these possible cost overruns. Joined at the beginning of his evening, his cabinet did not wish to react.

The City is still in the tendering process.
